From July 24 to August 3, 2008 the IV Summer Camp on Human Rights for Law Students took place. Just as during the previous years, the venue for the Summer Camp was offered by the town of Bad Liebenzell (Germany).

Participants of the Summer Camp were law students of various Belarusian universities, as well as Belarusian youth studying law abroad: EHU (Vilnius, Lithuiania), MSIIR/MGIMO (Moscow, Russia), University of Deusto (Bilbao, Spain), University of Wroclaw (Poland).

Organizers of the Summer Camp on Human Rights for Law Students were non-governmental organizations: Foundation for Legal Technologies Development (Kyiv, Ukraine) and International Forum Burg Liebenzell (Bad Liebenzell, Germany).

Educational program of the Summer Camp developed precisely for law students by international group of experts included the following subjects:

  • Introduction into the system of European democratic values;
  • Introduction into the concept of Human Rights: origin, philosophy, basic notions;
  • Human Rights and politics: alleged similarities and basic differences.
  • Public interest protection actions (Advocacy actions);
  • Possible restrictions, mechanisms of human rights protection (Upon the example of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus and international Human Rights documents);
  • European Convention on Human Rights and the Council of Europe;
  • Interaction of National and European Human Rights Law (upon the example of Germany);
  • The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights - promoting and protecting human rights;
  • UN Human Rights Committee: individual communications;
  • OSCE as a regional organization, human rights aspect of its activity.

Experts from Denmark, Russia, Germany and Belarus took part in the program.
Lectures to the students were given by, apart from others, a Representative of the Office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, a judge of the administrative court of Baden-Wurttemberg (Germany), a Human Rights Dimension Officer of the OSCE office.

As a continuation of the theoretical part, study visits were organized for participants to the European Court of Human Rights and the Council of Europe (Strasbourg, France). During the visits, students met a lawyer from the secretariat of the European Court of Human Rights (Ms. Irina Yatsenko) and the Head of Communication Unit of the Congress of local and regional authorities of the Council of Europe (Mr. Dmitry Marchenkov) who spoke about the activities of afore-mentioned institutions and answered the numerous questions of law students.

Culmination of the Summer Camp on Human Rights for Law Students was, indeed, a "Workshop of the Future" that turned out a, so to say, platform for the opinions exchange on the question of the role of lawyers in protection of human rights and public interests.
